An American documentary film exploring the ascent, descent and legacy of the late Chicago chef Charlie Trotter, Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter, will be released on 18 November.
Directed and written by Rebecca Halpern, the film reflects on the life and times of the chef, whose Lincoln Park restaurant was a culinary destination from 1987 to 2012. Considered one of the first celebrity chefs, Trotter's rise came at a price.
Exclusive footage, letters from personal and family archives, and a wide range of interviews create the context for the destructive pursuit of excellence by the volatile chef, to his demise in 2013.
Several high-profile Chicago chefs also weigh in with their memories of the chef, including Grant Achatz (Alinea), the late Homaro Cantu (Moto), Giuseppe Tentori (GT Fish & Oyster), and Graham Elliot, who worked in Trotter’s kitchen. There are also appearances by Anthony Bourdain and Julia Child.
