Michelin Guide Germany 2022: See the New Stars

The record breaking Michelin Guide Germany 2022 has launched with a healthy showing of new stars, including one new three-star restaurant, eight new two-star restaurants and 31 new one-star restaurants, taking the new total to an all time high of 327 starred restaurants

Following yet another unpredictable year, in which restaurants suffered from pandemic-induced closures and re-openings, the country has demonstrated a bright future in gastronomy. "Germany continues to show impressive consistency in the quality of German gastronomy in 2022," said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides. The country's restaurants have also proved a greater commitment to the principles of sustainability, with eleven restaurants claiming the Green Star award.

In the wine town of Piesport, schanz. restaurant climbed up the list from two stars to the pinnacle of German gastronomy. Patron and chef Thomas Schanz's restaurant was awarded three stars for his modern classic dishes that also manage to have personality and expression. Germany now has nine three-Michelin-starred restaurants.

Eight restaurants were newly listed with two stars, including ES:SENZ in Grassau, etz in Nuremberg and the three Munich restaurants: Tohru in der SchreibereiAtelier and Tantris. Restaurants 100/200 Kitchen in Hamburg, LOUIS Restaurant in Saarlouis, and Speisemeisterei in Stuttgart, rose up the ranks from one star to two stars.

With 31 new restaurants receiving a star, this year's German selection has also reached a record 272 one-star restaurants, with Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich welcoming a generous number between them.

The Michelin Guide Germany 2022 in numbers:

  • 297 restaurants with “Bib Gourmand” (of which 18 are new)

What are Michelin stars?

Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants that have been judged to have met particularly high standards. The highest accolade is three stars, which, according to the Michelin Guide, are awarded to restaurants offering ‘exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey’. Two stars are presented for ‘excellent cooking, worth a detour’, and one star can be won for ‘high-quality cooking, worth a stop’. Discover more: What is a Michelin Star and How Do You Get One?
