How to Make TikTok-Trending Butter

Journalist

Lockdown self-sufficiency, compounded by rising living costs, has once again got people back into their kitchens, with the hashtag #homemadefoodtrend gaining over 960 million views on TikTok.

Making butter at home is one of the trending recipes, with #homemadebutter on TikTok getting over 90 million views. Meanwhile #buttertock has nearly 300 million views, and it's no wonder - it couldn't be more satisfying to watch, any cheaper or easier to do.

How to make TikTok butter

Food blogger, cook and all-round butter fan Cherie Denham has a few million views for her simple recipe for creamy homemade Irish butter.

Here's how to make homemade butter:

  • Churn a pint of Irish cream for about 10 minutes, until the buttermilk separates from the butter. (if you don't have a manual churner you can shake the cream in a tupperware for a good half hour).
  • Strain off the buttermilk (refrigerate and use for making Irish soda bread later).
  • Form the butter into a ball and rinse repeatedly in ice water, to get rid of any residual buttermilk which can make your butter go rancid.
  • Shape the butter.
  • Then season generously with sea salt, cover and refrigerate.

Not only does it look like butter but it tastes like butter and is far more economial.
