In the latest episode of The Digest, a Fine Dining Lovers original podcast series, food writer Nicholas Gill recounts one of the culinary world’s greatest mysteries.

Back in the 1980s and '90s, his namesake, British chef Nicholas Gill, was the toast of the UK dining scene. But, as quickly as his star rose and with personal problems mounting, he disappeared off the face of the Earth, telling his brother, the late writer A.A. Gill that he was “going away”. He was never seen again.

Fast forward to the present, and New York-based writer Nicholas Gill is regularly pinged by online sleuths asking hopefully, “Are you him?”

In this podcast, Gill examines chef Gill’s story and recounts his own journey to find himself, a quest that led him around the globe and to eventually carve a place for himself in the world of food writing.

And we meet many more Nicholas Gills, all of whom have their own stories to tell about the pressures of modern life.

"Unsurprisingly, disappearing is a common theme in the world of gastronomy. It's a lifestyle that isn't kind to the soul," says Gill. "I'm not him, I'm not Nick Gill the chef... however, there are parts of his story that feel like my own."
