Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia in Spain, is a melting pot of cultures and cuisines, where it's impossible not to fall in love with its unique spirit, its colours and its people.

A tourist destination popular with travellers from all over the world, Barcelona has also carved out a decent reputation for its culinary offering, and become a popular destination for food and wine tourism.

Among countless places churning out typical paella and tapas, an emerging scene of haute cuisine restaurants have come to the fore, raining down Michelin-stars in Barcelona.

3-Michelin-star Restaurants Barcelona

Lasarte, the first 3-Michelin-star restaurant in Barcelona

A trip through the Michelin-star restaurants in Barcelona can only start from the temple of culinary excellence with a gastronomy guru like Martin Berasategui (12 Michelin stars, Spain's most emblazoned chef): his Lasarte at the 3-Michelin-star Hotel Monument is an expanding and evolving laboratory worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. Lasarte was also the first restaurant in Barcelona to win 3 Michelin stars.

It has been said that Barcelona is a piece of Italy transplanted to the Iberian Peninsula. That's why in the kitchen of the city's most famous restaurant we find an Italian, Paolo Casagrande, at the helm, who can also be credited with leading the restaurant to winning its third Michelin star.

Lasarte's proposal is strongly linked to the seasonality of the ingredients and the sea, a precious resource that Berasategui honours in all its creations. "My dishes are a symbiosis between the aromas and flavours of my native region (the Basque Country) and those of Catalonia," reads the chef's menus. In addition to the à la carte menu, customers can also choose between a Tasting Menu and a 'Lasarte' Menu, letting themselves be guided between iconic dishes and winning experiments. The cuisine is anchored to Iberian products, but experiments with influences from the rest of the world. Try dishes such as wagyu ravioli and glazed eel, iodised cream, horseradish and caviar, or squid tartare with liquid egg yolk, onion and kaffir consommé, or perhaps the risotto with fake pumpkin, cheek, sea urchins and 'quisquilla' .

ABaC in Barcelona, 3 Michelin Stars

Located within the eponymous luxury hotel in the heart of the city, ABaC is the vanguard of Michelin-star cuisine in Barcelona. "Everything starts with an idea," is the restaurant's strap line, says Jordi Cruz, the chef behind the cuisine. A Barcelona native, he arrived at ABaC in 2010, leading the restaurant to the pinnacle of gastronomy. His kitchen, by his own definition, is "evolutionary and restless, based on the product and able to make room for both creativity and tradition". For example: his textures of salmorejo spiced with droplets of bread and smoked sardines or the Chinese box: fried brioche with grilled eel, fresh wasabi and "all i oli" with smoked eel.

New Michelin-star restaurants in Barcelona - Aurt and Cinc Sentits

There are two new restaurants included in the latest Michelin guide to Barcelona. In addition to Angle, which earned its second Michelin star in 2020, Aurt and Cinc Sentits also enter the prestigious red guide. The latter already had a Michelin star in the past, and was again awarded one after its move.
