The Michelin Guide to Hokkaido 2017 has just been released and the big news is that Japan's northernmost island now has three, three Michelin star restaurants.
Hanakoji Sawada and Sushi Miyakawa join French restaurant Moliere, which gained a third star the only other time a Michelin Guide to Hokkaido has been published, in 2012. Sawada jumps from two to three stars, while Miyakawa comes straight in at three. All three restaurants can be found in the capital Sapporo.
There was also a new two star restaurant, Sapporo's Tempuraraki. In total, 76 restaurants were awarded stars, including 22 new entries. There were also 116 Bib Gourmand recommendations, for restaurants combining great cooking and value for money. See the full list of restaurants here.
